South Bay Polo’s Interscholastic Team

South Bay Polo’s Interscholastic Teams competed in the Mustang Madness Tournament on October 26, 27 & 28. Mustang Madness is an arena polo tournament held every fall at the home of the Cal Poly Polo Team at Central Coast Polo Club in Los Osos, California. Some of the top Collegiate and high school teams in the country competed.
Mustang Madness, held annually, is designed to start the United States Polo Association Intercollegiate/Interscholastic polo season. This tournament is important for teams to complete the necessary games to qualify to compete in the Regional Tournaments held in February of next year.
A few of the collegiate teams that attended included Stanford University, University of Kentucky, USC, Oregon State and Cal Poly. There were also a number of high school teams from throughout the region, some hailing from Yuba City, Ca and as far south as Poway.
South Bay’s Open Team walked away with a win on Friday night against the CCPC open team. It was a nail biter and we are so proud to be victorious! Our SB girl’s team battled against the Poway Girls as well, but came up a little short. We know what to work on now and will be practicing the next several weeks to bring home the win next time!
On Saturday, the South Bay Open Team played another hard fought game against the Oakdale Polo Team. The score was back and forth the entire game, but Oakdale pulled out the win in the last chukkar.
South Bay is excited to watch our teams compete in the coming months. There are weekly practices and scrimmages at our home arena in Gilroy. South Bay also scrimmages against the Stanford Polo Team every Wednesday at the Woddside Horse Park. Stop by and cheer them on if you’re in the area.
If you have a kid that may be interested in polo, South Bay has openings available on the teams. Players can start as young as 10 years old. Your high school student can also letter all 4 years! What college recruiter wouldn’t be impressed with that!! Contact us for more information!

Corky Linfoot Clinic

South Bay Polo was please to host Corky Linfoot for a clinic in the month of May.  A Former 7-goaler, Corky has won two U.S. Opens, 4 Pacific Opens and multiple tournaments abroad.

The three day clinic was split between the various polo clubs in the region, with many participating.  Many a polo player hears a little voice in their head, as they play the game, and it’s usually Corky’s.  “Slow Down”, “Two Hands”, “Speed Kills”, and “Own the Diamond” are indelibly ingrained in many a players head.  The group consisted of advanced players to beginners.  Corky had something for everyone.  Friday night covered the hitting cage, and Saturday was devoted to know-in strategies, and play at South Bay Polo.  Sunday was coached at Menlo Polo Club.  The highlight of his clinics are the coaching and playing videos.  It allows the participant to obsess over every little new suggestion or technique promoted.  Tim Westin, owner of South Bay Polo, shown with Corky, was happy to host the clinic.  As is the South Bay Polo Tradition, everyone stayed around to socialize, and enjoy a sumptuous BBQ lunch.
